She Wants To Party With You
Thao Nguyen has been building to this…shifting from carefree indie folk to now indie urban dance rock with elements of noise pop…can we call it party prog??? Anyone who names their backing band The Get Down Stay Down is in touch with the joy of playing music. While previous LPs We Brave Bee Stings And All and Know Better Learn Faster were charming and infectious…today’s track „City“ from this year’s We The Common is a joyous rapture of maching gun drums a la M.I.A. or Sleigh Bells mixed with fuzzy electric guitar, xylophone, and shout alongs. We find Thao much more experimental vocally as well, evident that the time spent hanging out with Mirah, Joanna Newsom, and Tune Yards‘ Merrill Garbus has rubbed off as a great outlet for eccentric passion.
„City“ opens with Thao’s dirty, shifting guitar slipping and dancing between pummelling programmed drums as she sings with a fuzz reverb, „Heartsleeves and overcoats, drift away in smaller boats.“ That guitar riff is accentuated by some heavy handed slammed drums and after the second verse, the band drops all but out minus some faint harmonic chants before punching back in. The last thirty seconds of the song sounds like a dozen new Thaos have sprouted up to join in an a cappela chorus. Hailing from the glorious San Francisco, Thao is happy to host her own downtown party and this is her invitation to us. Turn it up, the drums seem to respond nicely with volume boosts.
